Our History

College Grove Methodist Church has deep roots in the life of the College Grove community, with a story that stretches back to the mid-19th century. From its earliest beginnings, the church has served as a place of worship, education, and fellowship, reflecting both the faith of its people and the character of this historic farming community.

Beginnings: Faith and Education

In 1860, land was deeded by Dr. Samuel Webb for the establishment of a Methodist church and a young ladies’ seminary. This dual purpose reflected the strong Methodist commitment to both spiritual formation and education. Soon after, the congregation constructed a small frame church that faithfully served the community for several decades.

By the late 1880s, the original building could no longer accommodate the growing congregation, and plans were made for a new sanctuary—one that would become a defining landmark in College Grove.

The Victorian Sanctuary

In 1888, construction began on the present church building under the craftsmanship of local carpenter T. G. Slate. Built in a distinctive Folk Victorian (“Fast-lake”) style, the structure features elaborate milled wood decoration rarely found in rural churches of the era. The building was completed and dedicated in 1889, quickly becoming both a spiritual home and a visual centerpiece for the community.

Today, the sanctuary remains a well-preserved example of late 19th-century frame church architecture, retaining much of its original character and charm.

Growth and Change Through the Years

As the congregation continued to grow and adapt, the church experienced several important additions and renovations:

  • 1932: Sunday School rooms were added to support Christian education.
  • 1948: The building was raised, a basement was added, and additional land was acquired through the efforts of Marvin B. Scales.
  • 1952: Memorial stained-glass windows and a new organ were installed.
  • 1956: A chapel and additional classrooms were constructed.
  • 1983: The church steeple was erected in honor of the Joe C. Bellenfant family.
  • 2007: The Fellowship Hall was constructed.
  • 2023: In a desire to remain faithful to God, the congregation became an independent Methodist Church.

Each of these changes reflects a congregation seeking to meet the needs of its time while honoring its past.

A Recognized Landmark

In 1988, College Grove Methodist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and its long-standing role in the spiritual life of the community. Early church records include families such as Bellenfant, Critchlow, Demonbreun, Maxwell, and Ogilvie names still woven into the broader story of College Grove.

A Living Legacy

While College Grove has grown and changed over the years, the church has remained a constant presence—rooted in faith, shaped by community, and committed to service. From its beginnings in a small frame building to its iconic Victorian sanctuary, College Grove Methodist Church continues to be a place of warm welcome, worship, and fellowship.

Honoring more than a century of ministry, the congregation looks to the future with gratitude for the past and trust in God’s ongoing work, believing that the story of College Grove Methodist Church is still being written.
